It is possible to set up groups of entities within a model version. These groups can hold some or all of the objects in a model version. An object as such, only exists once in the metadata; therefore if we have a dimension object called dim_product, there is, and can only be, one copy of dim_product within the metadata. Groups are used to hold a set of objects that relate back to a similar module or analysis area of the data warehouse. We can for example have groups called Budgets, Promotions or Demand Planning. In this way, groups enable us to restrict the amount of information (objects) we need to deal with, to just those relevant to the area being worked on.
