Heat Maps are an excellent way to compare data using color intensity and size. Both color intensity and size of the boxes indicate relative performance that helps you to spot trends or standouts in a single glance.

To build a Heat Map chart
- Connect to the sample data source in Aqua Data Studio.
- From the Dimensions pane, select Coffee Brand and Geography.
- From the Measures pane, select Profit.
- Click the
tab and the
tab and then click 
. Visualization builds a Heat Map Chart.
By default, Visualization moves Profit to the Color Deck and displays the profit value of coffee brands in different color intensityintensities. The size of the square is uniform because the Size Deck is empty. Now move Profit from the Measures pane to the Size Deck. Visual Analytics displays the profit value for coffee brands in different square sizes and color intensity. Also, when Visualization built this chart, it displayed both dimensions on the Y-axis. We have changed this display by moving Geography to the Columns Deck. Now, Coffee Brand is on the Y-axis, and Geography is on the X-axis.
Other Actions
Other actions that you can perform on a plotted heat map chart are as follows:
- You can sort data by using various sort options available in the chart view or the Advanced dialog. For more information, see Sorting.
- You can use highlight actions to focus on the selected Heat Map box. Visual Analytics makes the highlighted boxes and its data labels prominent while dimming others in the view. For more information, see Highlight Actions.
- You can filter records directly from the chart view without manually adding any fields to the Filters Deck. For more information, see Filters.
- You can export worksheets containing visualization to Image, HTML, and PDF formats. For more information, see Export Visualizations.
