Source models are used to discover, profile and document existing source systems.
A source system can be seen as a diagram displaying existing data from either a database or from files. The discovery process retrieves the structural information from the source system, including tables and columns. Profiling can be performed to help understand the contents of the source system.
The source system acts as the base that feeds into the diagrams used for modeling the data warehouse. The tables and columns in the source system are typically used while designing in the other models.
