By default, Visual Analytics determines the axis range when you build a chart using a continuous dimension or a measure. You can specify your range and customize the axis appearance. Axis options are available in the Edit Axis dialog box.

Contents

Axis Range

Visual Analytics automatically computes axes range when the user selects either uniform or independent axis range. In addition, Visual Analytics gives you the control of setting the desired range using the fixed axis range.

Uniform Axis Range

By default, Visual Analytics applies the same range to each row or column based on the maximum data range for all panes in the view.

Independent Axis Range

Visual Analytics sets an independent range for each row or column based on the minimum and the maximum values in the data.

Fixed Axis Range

You can fix the desired range for both the ends or only one end. You will see a  icon next to the axis title indicating you have fixed the axis range. If no title is given, then this icon does not show for the axis range.

  • Fix both ends of the axis: Specify the start and end range. Visual Analytics determines the range by specified values.
  • Fix one end of the axis: When fixing only one end, choose the other end as uniform or independent.
For example, the following view shows freight by order month. The actual data contains freight from March to September. However, using this option, you can set the axis range that starts from January and ends in December so you can see where the data points are plotted in the complete range. The  icon is displayed for OrderDate because that is the range you have fixed.

Include zero

Visual Analytics include zero in the axis scale. This is the default behavior and is useful when the data contains negative values. However, you can exclude zero from the axis scale and start the range from the minimum value in your data.

  • This check box is disabled when both the start and the end ranges of the axis are fixed.
  • This check box does not show for date and number dimension axis.

Axis Appearance

Tick Marks

When Visual Analytics builds the chart, Tick Marks are automatically shown on Vertical or Horizontal or both the axes. If you make the axis using dimensions, then you can either keep or hide tick marks from the chart. However, if you make the axis using date dimensions, you will see the additional option that gives following result based on the selected date axis.

If you make the axis using:

  • primary date dimensions, then you can display tick marks after any interval.
  • secondary date dimensions, then you can display tick marks for any date aggregation after any interval.

Reversed Scale

You can reverse the axis scale to run from maximum to minimum.

Title and Location

Depending on the fields in the view, Visual Analytics automatically generates a title and location for the axis. You can change the title and location as desired.
