For this example, you will build a Basic View to display Profit by Credit Card Type based on the Visual Analytics Example xlsx file we connected to in the Building Views page. Perform the following steps to build the view.

1. Click and drag Profit from Measures into the Rows deck.

2. Drag a field over the Rows deck without releasing it. Notice that a blue triangle appears to let you know you can release it here. Drop it in the Rows deck.

When you drop a field in the Rows deck you will notice that the View populates with this Measures contents as rows.

The green color of this field in the deck indicates that it is continuous data (data which can be of any value in a range) and is a Measure.

3. Drag the Card Type from Dimensions and drop it into the Columns deck.

Notice that the field you just dropped is blue.

Blue indicates this field is a Dimension and is discrete data (data which can be of only specific values). Once you drop the Dimension into place, Visual Analytics automatically generates a Bar Chart.

In the Menu choose [Analysis > Show Data Labels] to show values within the view for each of the bars.

This basic process is used throughout Visual Analytics: Drag one or more items from the Data Pane into Decks and adjust properties and options to alter how the data appears in the view pane.
