Assigning an owner to a server provides a single point of contact for coworkers to call when that instance is experiencing performance issues. Server ownership can correlate with specific job responsibilities for monitoring your SQL Server environment.

To assign an owner using the SQLDM Console, follow these steps:

  1. In the Newsfeed navigation pane, click SQL Servers.
  2. In the right pane, select the server whose owner you want to change.
  3. In the profile pane, click Info.
  4. In the right pane, click Edit.
  5. Use the Owner pull-down menu to select the appropriate person.
  6. Click OK.

What happens when I assign server ownership to someone?

When you assign an owner to a server, the IDERA Newsfeed Platform automatically configures this user to follow the selected instance, ensuring them to easily and quickly access the server status updates from the Most Recent feed. The platform also updates the server profile to include the owner's contact information. After these updates are complete, the SQLDM Mobile and Newsfeed Service sends a notification email to the previous owner stating that the ownership has changed.

What are the benefits of server ownership?

Server ownership provides several benefits:

  • Following - By owning a server, you automatically follow it.
  • Notifications - You receive notifications from SQLDM Mobile & Newsfeed Service when anyone interacts with a server you own. To receive these notifications, change your account settings.

Who can set server ownership?

Any IDERA Newsfeed user who has SQLDM administrator rights can set ownership. To check these security settings, identify which SQLDM installation the IDERA Newsfeed Platform is using as the authentication provider, and then use the SQLDM Console to verify its security settings.
