Bins are a special Dimension type that gets formed by choosing a Measure and dividing up its values into groups.  These groups can be formed based on the number of values within them (Size of Bins), or how many bins the values are divided into (Number of Bins). Bins can be dragged from the Dimensions pane into the Columns and Rows decks like any other Dimension, but are particularly useful for creating Histograms.

How to Create Bins

1. Right-click the Measure you wish to create Bins from and select [Create Bins...]

2. The [Create Bins] Dialog appears allowing you enter a Bin name and select either Size of Bins or Number of Bins.

By default, the Bin name will include the measure name you started with, followed by (bin).

3. Enter the value desired for Size of Bins or Number of Bins.

It is possible to create a new Parameter or use a preexisting Parameter for Bin values by clicking the drop-down arrow on the right side of the value input form.

The Range of Values details displays the Minimum and Maximum values of the Measure used for the selected Bin. The Diff field indicates the difference between the Min and Max values.

4. Click OK when you have your Bins configured as you like.

A new field appears in the Dimensions using your Bin name next to a Bin icon to differentiate it from the other dimension types.

Mouse-hovering a Bin in the Dimensions Pane will display the formula used for its Bins.

Any Bin can be edited by right-clicking on it in the Dimensions Pane and choosing [Edit...]

The Edit Bin dialog appears allowing you to make adjustments.

When you click OK your edits are saved and your Worksheet will update to reflect the changes.

You can rename a Bin by right-clicking it and selecting [Rename...] from the right-click context menu as you would any other Dimension.

See How to Make a Histogram for more on how to put bins to use.
