Horizon charts are well-suited for time series visualization and comparing trends in data that can help you to:

  • Spot patterns
  • View data trends independently
  • Make comparisons
  • View changes in an accurate manner

The horizon chart reduces the space in use by mirroring the negative and positive values on the same x-axis instead of showing the negative values beneath the x-axis. It differentiates between the negative and positive values by using hues of blue and red and band-level density. It represents the band-level density by using darker shades for large values and lighter shades for smaller values.

Build a Horizon Chart

To build a Horizon Chart

  1. Connect to the sample data source in Aqua Data Studio.
  2. Drag stock_date and stock_symbol dimensions to the Columns Deck. Right-click stock_date and click Week Number.
  3. Drag the stock_symbol dimension to the Rows Deck.
  4. Click the tab and then click. Visualization builds a Horizon Chart for your dataset using 1 band.

Change the Band Options

The number of bands controls the number of times the chart is divided and layered on top of each other. This has the desired effect of reducing the amount of vertical space required to draw the chart. For every layer or band that is added, a different color intensity is used to distinguish each band. You can easily spot stocks with extreme values as they appear in darker shades.

To change the band option

  1. In the Chart Properties area, click Options
  2. If you click 3 Bands. Horizon chart appears in three-band layers where lighter shades are associated with minimum stock values and darker shades with maximum stock values.

If you click 2 Bands. Horizon chart appears in two-band layers that are overlapping each other of shades of blue and red.

Color Deck Configuration

When a measure is placed in the Color Deck, Visualization displays the Color Legend for that measure. The Color Legend shows the band range for both negative and positive values. In the following example, the band is set to 3. Each band range is associated with a percentage and displays a difference from the previous stock closing. The measure placed in the Color Deck must also be used in the Rows Deck.

Other Actions

Other actions that you can perform on a plotted horizon chart are as follows:

  • You can sort data by using various sort options available in the chart view or the Advanced dialog. For more information, see Sorting.
  • You can filter records directly from the chart view without manually adding any fields to the Filters Deck. For more information, see Filters.
  • You can export worksheets containing visualization to Image, HTML, and PDF formats. For more information, see Export Visualizations.
