Size Legend

When a measure is placed in the Size Deck, Visual Analytics displays a size legend below the Chart Properties Deck. The legend shows the range and size distribution for that measure. The smallest size represents the lowest value, and the largest size represents the highest value. To edit the size legend, click Size Deck > Edit Size.

Options Available in Edit Size Dialog

The edit size dialog contains various options using which you can edit the size legend.

Sizes Vary

From the Sizes Vary drop-down, select one of the following options:

  • By Range: Shows variation in size relative to the minimum value of a set. The smallest possible size corresponds to the minimum of the visible data points. This is often chosen to highlight internal differences in a data set. To adjust the smallest and largest possible point sizes, use the left and right sliders. In the below example, By Range maximizes the size differences, making them more obvious. Choosing From Zero variation could make all sizes on the chart too similar to offer any analytic value.
  • From Zero: Shows variation in size relative to zero. The smallest possible size corresponds to a data value of zero. This is often useful for data sets containing both positive and negative values. To adjust the largest possible point size, use the single slider. In the below example, the data we are analyzing contains both positive and negative values. Note that the smaller sizes correspond to smaller absolute values of data.

Size Slider

You can use the Size slider to adjust the assigned size distribution for each range. The left slider controls the minimum possible size. The right slider controls the maximum. With By Range, you can adjust both smallest and largest values. With From Zero, you can only adjust the largest values.

Sample Legend

The sample legend is an exact copy of the size legend and appears on the left-side of the edit size dialog. The sample legend immediately shows how the bars or shapes in your chart would appear after Visual Analytics applied your changes.

Range

You can specify a minimum and a maximum for the size legend. If the entered minimum value is greater than the original minimum value, then Visual Analytics appends the modified value with “<” operator and assigns the smallest size to all values below the entered minimum value. If the entered maximum value is less than the original maximum value, then Visual Analytics appends the modified value with “>” operator and assigns the largest size to all values above the entered maximum value.

Reversed

Reversing the size distribution reverses the assigned sizes from the highest range to the lowest range. This check box is read-only if you have selected the From Zero size vary option.

Size Slider

You can resize bars, lines, or shapes of a chart, based on the measure value or change the thickness uniformly without placing the measure in the Size Deck.

For the Line chart, you can only change the thickness of the lines uniformly. Size Deck support for measure fields is not available for Line chart in this release. To resize the size slider, click Size Deck > Size Slider.
